All seven Maori electorates have young population the youngest population being in Hauraki-Waikato with a median age of23.4 years according to the 2013 census figures released by Statistics New Zealand.

Census also shows that Te Tai Tonga has the median personal income of $28,000. Te Waiariki had the lowest of $21,700 with General Manager 201 Census Gareth Meecher saying Maori are a young population group and the younger people have lower incomes than older people.

Census also shows in the Waiariki Electorate 1 in 4 people of Maori descent spoke te reo Maori while in the Tai Tonga electorate 1 in 8 people were fluent. The Waiariki electorate includes Whakatane, Tauranga, Rotorua ana Taupo.
