A Waimana family is in mourning following the death of their pillar while fishing at the Motu rivermouth in Te Whanau-a-Apanui district on Monday afternoon

41 year old Benjamin Robert Tekira man attempted to cross the river mouth but was caught in a rip and dragged under and was lost just before 4pm.

Despite searches for several hours there was no sign of the man who was presumed drowned and the search was called off, however family members kept vigil along the beach and at 8:30pm his body was returned to the beach about 150 metres from where he was swept away.
