A blessing on behalf of Te Waimana Kaaku to open the new Multi-Sport Courts at the Waimana Domain in Waimana will be held this Saturday 8am.  The project initiated by Te Waimana Kaaku Tribal Authority and administered through Te Waimana Kaaku Trust was preparation for the Tuhoe Ahurei and also part of their Tribal Development Plan. The completed project includes the upgrade of old tennis courts to multi-sport courts, netball, tennis and basketball and volleyball, upgrade of rugby field lights and community mural.

Project co-ordinator Toni Boynton said, “The project wouldnt have got off the ground without the support from our Tribal Authority, our community and our relationship with Whakatane District Council.  It is the largest investment into infrasturure that Waimana has seen in over 50 years, with $220,000 of funding received from Lion Foundation, Southern Trust, Grassroots and Eastbay Energy Trust. It’s about supporting transformational change within our communities through positive vision, respectful relationships, hard mahi and tangible results”.

Although the Tūhoe Ahurei was the catalyst to this project, Waimana has had a long history with sport as the main positive social driver of the community for generations.  The new amenities will also provide a safe enviroment to host sport tournaments, fundraisers and events that will benefit the wider Whakatane district.
