Te Tarata haka wins at Mana Kuratahi 2015

History repeats itself as a Whakatōhea haka roopu take second place in the national kapa haka competition with the largest turn out to Mana Kuratahi to date with over 47 schools participating from around the country.

Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Waiōweka placed second overall with their haka Te Tarata placing first overall in a year where Te Whakatohea held the 150thcommemorations of the siege of Te Tarata last month.

“We are immensely proud of our tamariki taking second overall in Mana Kuratahi after just winning the Delamere cup last month and of course inspired by our pakeke roopu Ōpōtiki Mai Tawhiti placing second at Te Matatini. It has been a significant year for Whakatōhea and Ngāti Ira and it is due to our whole whānau, hapū and iwi support.” says Anita Kurei-Paruru, principal at Te Kura o Waiōweka.

First time judge and kapa haka exponent from Te Whakatōhea, Paora Brosnan says the standard is high this year and is a sign of great things to come.

The school and community are planning a pōhiri for the kura due to arrive back to Waiōweka  marae around 4pm and then Ngāti Ira commence the weekend with their Moko Papa as part of the 150th commemorations of Te Tarata.
