According to history when Te Rangihouhiri 2 grew up he travelled to Tauranga to follow in the footsteps of his ancestor Te Rangihouhiri 1 and meet up with his relatives and visit the battle sites seiged by his ancestors. During the journey he met up with his ancestor Tamapahore at Otitapu. Tamapahore took Te Rangihouhiri 2 to see the forts taken by Te Rangihouhiri 1. He was thrilled to hear the events from Tamapahore about his ancestors he expressed his thoughts by composing this Patere

Ko Awa ko Rongo ko Rongo ko Tama ko Uru
Ko koe rā i whawhati i te parihau o te moana
I tau ai te waka o Tamatea
Mimiti ana te tai he tira he tira
He taua whāno whāno
E ko Kahukura te manu whakawā i te mate
Waiho ake au i muri nei
