As part of New Zealand Music Month, TumekeFM will be looking at New Zealand music far and wide, spotlighting relevant songs and artists from Aotearoa, throughout the month of May.
This week we take a look at Maranga Ake Ai, written by Joe Williams and recorded by his band Aotearoa, which first aired in 1984.
At the time its militant English lyrics caused quite a stir, such as the following:

‘Where’s my freedom from oppression?/Coz that’s what my people need’

Many Pākehā were deeply offended by the lyrics in this song.  How many, you ask? Enough that the song was banned from mainstream radio… Listen below:
