pumau_P1The brand new alum PŪMAU from Rob Ruha was released late last week in honor and celebration of the coronation day of King Tūheitia.

“PŪMAU means enduring, steadfast and solid. The themes of the waiata therefore are things that occupy an enduring space in my heart and cover topics that I think have intergenerational relevance. Things like whakapono (faith), Te Tiriti o Waitangi, love, Mana Motuhake and powerful leadership: all the things I think we as a society need to be talking about more. Hence the decision to release part 1 of the album on the coronation day of Kingi Tūheitia: the symbol of all these enduring kaupapa and the gatherer of all nations to discuss them.” Rob Ruha

Part 1 of the album features Māori Music pioneer Adam Whauwhau and the angelic Maisey Rika. Breathtaking brass arrangements by Godfrey de Grut, emotive string performances by The Black Quartet, hypnotic guitar riffs and licks by JJ Rika and Brett Adams and haunting taonga pūoro overtones by Horomona Horo are mixed with a pulsing and infectious rhythm section that is synonymous Rob’s Haka-soul brand of music. PŪMAU (p1) is an exciting extension to Rob’s award winning Tiki Tapu EP and is set to move all fans of good music.

Rob Ruha, a multi-award winning singer/songwriter from Aotearoa and has a unique style of music that is described as an eclectic mix of soul-roots-reggae with RnB licks, laced with rock-blues and bohemian-jazz-fusion accents. Grounded on a bed of the tribal mōteatea rhythms and the solid pulse of haka, Rob explains his brand of music as, “Haka-soul”.

As a songsmith, Rob’s genius lies in the rare ability of weaving together sound and rhythm that bring to life the lyrics and themes of the song. Central concepts to Rob’s music include the liberation of cultural expressions of identity, unity, spiritual belief systems and leadership solidarity.

To date, Rob’s waiata have featured on the Radio scope Te Reo Māori Charts, no.1 on the iTune NZ and Australian World Music Charts, The Top 10 New Zealand Music Charts (NZ Singles) and IMNZ Singles Charts. Following his debut EP release in 2014 Rob was the recipient of the Silver Scrolls Maioha Award for Best Māori Composition, the Vodafone New Zealand Tui Music Award for Best Māori Album, and Best Male Solo Artist, Best Songwriter and Best Song at the Waiata Māori Music awards.

PŪMAU (p1) can be purchased from iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, Amplifier and all major online music platforms.
