The Wharenui Hotunui should be returned to Ngati Awa according Pouroto Ngaropo tohunga karakia o Ngati Awa. This has come about after learning that the Auckland Museum thinks Hotunui is not in the right environment.

While it is only an idea another place could be likely. But should that be the case then give it back to Ngati Awa.

According to Pouroto,  Ngati Awa built and carved Hotunui with the likes of Wepiha Apanui, Rangitukehu Te Wharewera, Tiopira Hukiki, Te Putere and Te Pirini. Hotunui was gifted to Hoterini Taipari son of a rangatira o Ngati Maru in Thames who married Mereana Mokomoko daughter of Apanui Hamaiwaho of Ngati Awa.

He korero e taka mai ana na te rongohanga kare Te Whare Taonga o Tamaki-makau-rau e mahara ana he wahi tika nona kia pupuri i a Hotunui. Engari he whakaaro noa iho nona ekene ka tuku ki wahi ke atu whakatau ai.
