Whakatane Council and Police are looking for ways to address the concerns of residents living in the Awatapu Reserve area.

The Awatapu Reserve is used regularly by locals as a thoroughfare to shopping and visiting neighborhood friends. But the Awatapu Reserve attracts light-fingered  and other people who cause destruction invade  local homes for fun.

Whakatane Council spokeswoman Paula Chapman said they rule out a gate which will cost $10,000 and the annual upkeep will cost $3,300. A better plan would be to install lights and CCTV to film people passing thorough and may catch images of criminal activities.
