Prof. Tai Black speaks about his rangahau of Te Waiata Tangi Tawhiti by Pikihuia Te Ngahuru. His korero is dedicated to PutiPuti O’Brien and he recalls how Mason Durie invited him to a Ratana conference in the 1990’s where he delivered a kauhau to the Maori nurses. The kauhau was based on the use of waiata to maintain well being. Putiputi O’Brien was in the audience at the time and her ensuing questions and comments have stuck with Tai all these years. Those comments revolved around Aunty Puti’s experience of her father Eruera Manuera and his relationship with waiata. Tai also speaks about the new book release ‘The Fire that Kindles the Heart – Ten Maori Scholars’.
