Maori Concepts and Pakeha Law collide but in the end Pakeha Law or democracy prevails in the case of Te Runanga o Ngati Awa last Friday.

Joe Mason challenged the chairmanship of Te Runanga o Ngati Awa and won the seat. A vote was initiated on who would get the chairmanship the elder or the younger and of the 21 votes 11 of those voted for Joe Mason to be the Chairman o Te Runanga o Ngati Awa.

Sadly Te Kei Merito has relequished his chairmanship which he had held since December 2008.

Materoa Dodd is hapy about the new charter allowing the challenge because it allows women in such positions, normally women could not stand in such positions so she challenged for the deputy chair but Pouroto Ngaropo retains his deputy chair which he has held for 22 years.

No reira kua makere mai a Te Kei Merito i taua turanga heamana i mau i a ia mai ano i te marama o Hakihea rua mano ma waru.
