Te Kura Kaupapa o Orīni ki Ngāti Awa is gearing up towards becoming it’s own entity as a standalone Kura Kaupapa with whānau meeting for the first time last night with the ministry appointed Establishment Board of Trustees (EBOT) and members of the Ministry of Education. The school has been operating as a satellite school under the umbrella of Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Whakarewa I Te Reo Ki Tuwharetoa in Taupo for almost a decade and as a ‘Teina’ school, has had to rely on the Taupo based kura for its financial support.

Te Kura Kaupapa o Orīni recently received the green light from the Ministry of Education for its independence and for the building of a new school after years of negotiation between the school whanau, its administration (led by Tumuaki Moana Morgan and her husband Bob Morgan) and the Ministry of Education. Te Kura Kaupapa o Orīni ki Ngāti Awa begins under its new status as an independent Kura Kaupapa in July, 2015. The Whare Kura arm of the school will continue to operate under the umbrella of Whakarewarewa at this stage.
