A porch structure is being carved and will be the largest carving ever in Aotearoa according to reports coming out of Rotorua.

Reporter Sonya Bateson has shown a design of the porch that will duplicate the front of an ancestral house. But it’s six will be 30 meters wide and 13 meters tall.

This carved porch will be the face of the stage at the for the competing kapa haka participating at the Matatini Festival next February.

The cost of the carvings will be borne by the Matatini and The NZ Maori Arts and Crafts Institute both giving equal payments and perhaps using the carved porch for other Matatini Festivals in the future.

Most of the logs supplied for carving were donated some of Totara and a 4500 year old kauri. Some of the carvers involved in the carving are James Rickard, Heremia Nichols and Jeffrey Ruha.
