Mountain bike champion Karen Hanlen is doing her bit to help out kiwi in her local area of Whakatane.

Karen fronts a new video produced as part of an educational initiative by the Whakatane Kiwi Trust.

The purpose of this video is to make people aware of how they can help protect the kiwi living near the town.

As a born and breed Whakatane kiwi herself, Karen was delighted to help out with the project saying it is a real privilege having kiwi living so close to town.

“The survival of kiwi around Whakatane relies on all of us to make sure their protection continues,” she says.

“By learning about kiwi and helping to protect them, we can all become part of this wonderful success story, right on our doorstep.”

The video can be viewed at the Whakatane Arts Raymond Ching and Hamish Foote exhibition ‘Flight’ which opens at Te Koputu the Whakatane Library and Exhibition Centre on 11 October. From 11 October the video can also be viewed on YouTube at:
