The Fire Service is warning communities about using electric heaters to warm their homes with the onset of Winter and the cold season after a house in Whakatane caught fire after the motor of the heater exploded.

The arrival of the Whakatane Fire Brigade doused the fire and no one was injured. Fire Safety Officer Jon Rewi there many homes now with electrical conveniences to warm the houses but people must stay in the same room as the appliances including when cooking meals until they are switched off  after the meal is cooked.

Jon Rewi said fire spreads very quickly and will engulf the home if safety measures are not put in place by the person for his/her own good.
