There is a archaeology seminar to take place which has been named Whats Under Our Town The Archaeology of Whakatane.

The seminar will be presented by local archaeologist Lynda Walter in junction with the Historical Places Trust and talk about the history from beneath Whakatane.

Lynda Walter is an archaeologist who walks and talks her experiences about ancient community sites in the Whakatane District right to this period.

For example who were the first people, their food sources and lifestyle. Perhaps taking samples of items made and used by those older communities to aid in their survival.

There will also be a historic trip for those people keen to do so at Tauwhare Pa and listen to those stories and see the middens which some are easily recognisable as kumara pits. The archaeology seminar will be 9 May and the trip to Tauwhare Pa will be 18 May.
