Monday 11th May  – Nehutanga o Ned Koopu

On Sunday the 9th of May at Maraenui Marae farewells and tributes filled with laughter and warm refections flowed at the funeral service held for Tumeke FM Sports host, Ned Koopu. Following the funeral, Ned’s wife Karen expressed her heartfelt thanks to guests and the hau kainga alike, and also acknowledged that usually on a Saturday Ned would be hosting his sports show on Tumeke FM.

Tuesday 12th May  – Youth Representatives wanted for Wānanga in Wellington

Hei tikanga ki roto i te kaupapa me tukua tetahi ingoa o tetahi rangatahi ka pakeke ake i nga tau tekau ma waru ki te tau rua tekau ma ono kia pouroki i mua atu i te paunga o tenei marama o Haratua. The council is calling for nominations of youth who wish to represent the community as part of a leadership programme, Te Wananga Rangatira Tumanako which will be held in Wellington from the 2nd to the 5th of July. The council will provide funding for selected participants to attend the wānanga. Those keen to represent local youth may register their interest directly with Tony Bonne.

Wednesday 13th May – Manu Tiitii

Otira no nga tau e rima tekau tawhito i whakamutu te iwi me te Karauna i te hopukanga o te titi e mimiti ana, aa no taua rahuitanga mo nga tau ki muri ngaro atu hoki nga tikanga o Ngati Awa e hangai ana ki te hopu tiitii. No tera tau i tu ai te hopukanga ano o te titi. Hei te te paunga o tenei tau rua mano ngahuru ma rima ka haere ano etahi o Ngati Awa ki Moutohora ki te hauhake tiitii hei whangai i etahi o ona hapori i tenei momo kai manu o nehera.

By the end of the 1960’s, Ngati Awa’s traditional but unsustainable method of catching Mutton Birds by net was bought to an to end by both the iwi and council with large numbers of people rowing across  to Whale Island to catch the birds. Last year however, the traditional practice of netting was resurrected as a runanga led event. At the end of this year Ngāti Awa will again do another annual cull using traditional practices.

A new preschool offering full immersion in Te Reo Māori has opened in Gate Pa, Tauranga. We speak with Richard Inder, School Principal about the expertise of staff involved in running the early childhood Māori language centre (audio to come).
